CAN YOU REHEATH RICE?

The short answer is yes — as long as it’s been stored properly and hasn’t already been reheated. When you do, make sure it’s piping hot all the way through before eating.

The longer answer is also yes — but with a word of caution. You can get food poisoning from reheated rice if it hasn’t been stored correctly. It’s not the reheating itself that’s the problem, but what happens in between cooking and reheating.

How to Store Leftover Rice Safely

If you have leftover rice, cool it down as quickly as possible — ideally within an hour. Splitting it into smaller portions helps it cool faster, and you can also place the containers in cold water to speed things up.

Avoid leaving rice sitting in the cooker, steamer, or pan to cool. And don’t put it straight into the fridge while it’s still hot — that can raise the temperature inside and affect other foods.

Once the rice is cool, store it in the fridge and use or reheat it within 24 hours. If you’re not planning to eat it that soon, pop it in the freezer and enjoy it another day.

What About Takeaway Rice?

So far, we’ve been talking about rice cooked at home — but what about rice from a takeaway or restaurant? In this case, it’s best to be extra careful. Ideally, eat it soon after purchase or delivery.

Some food businesses pre-cook their rice and reheat it before serving. That means if you try to reheat it again later, it may have already been through several heating and cooling cycles. Whether it’s safe depends on how it was cooked, stored, and handled — so when in doubt, it’s worth asking how they prepare their rice.

Why Rice Can Be Risky

Uncooked rice can contain spores of a bacterium called Bacillus cereus, which can cause food poisoning. These spores can survive cooking, and if cooked rice is left at room temperature for too long, the bacteria can multiply or produce toxins that make the rice unsafe to eat.

The bottom line? You can safely reheat rice, but only if it’s been stored properly and heated thoroughly. Treat it with the same care you would any perishable food — and you can enjoy it again without worry.
